Hostel Consulting

The hostels guests fall in love with are not accidents.

They're designed. From how the space feels, to how the staff shows up, and how it all comes together. When done correctly, the effects are profitable, memorable, and undeniable! The Welcome Effect can look like a guest telling their friends "you have to stay there when you're in Rio," or a guest who books three nights but extends to ten because the hostel feels like home.

That's The Welcome Effect.

And I can help you create it.

Hostels today are priced close to hotels. The only reason someone still chooses a hostel is the social experience.

Most owners know they need it, but between running the day-to-day, it never gets built properly. That's where The Welcome Effect comes in.

How do I know exactly what makes a guest book three nights and stay for ten, then leave a great review? After years working in education, followed by hospitality and tourism, I realized my love for travel, teaching, and hospitality weren't separate passions, they make a real difference when combined. I followed that passion, working nearly every staffing role a hostel has across Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America — from some of the most famous, well-performing hostel chains to underperforming ones. Along the way, I learned what works and what doesn't. Now I build profitable social structures (staff, spaces, and systems) that create welcoming, memorable hostel stays, measurable in bookings and reviews.

Staff hospitality training, space design, booking site upgrades, volunteer programs, activity partnerships. All of it. Leaving hostels with better brand recognition, better reviews, higher ratings, and more return guests. Making your hostel more than just a bed.

Here are the real results from two hostels I've worked with.

CabanaCopa Hostel
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The situation: low Hostelworld ratings, underperforming staff, and no activity schedule. The kitchen and common spaces needed a full redesign, and the volunteer program wasn't built to support any of it.

What I did

  • Rebuilt the volunteer program from the ground up: new roles, new culture, better training
  • Helped hire and train a receptionist, worked with management on hospitality standards
  • Built a weekly activity schedule, marketed through WhatsApp groups and signage
  • Redesigned the kitchen and updated signage for a "chic backpacker" look
  • Rewrote the booking profile, refreshed photos, added Hostelworld Link-Ups
  • Rebuilt the WorldPackers listing from scratch
  • Built new local activity partnerships

Mango Tree Ipanema Hostel

The situation: an underperforming bar, no volunteer management, and no activity schedule. The front desk needed hospitality training, and there weren't any profitable activity partnerships in place.

What I did

  • Studied guest feedback to guide the plan
  • Hired and trained volunteers around new roles, focused on social fit
  • Trained volunteers to run the bar, built weekly specials and promotions
  • Created a full activity schedule, marketed through WhatsApp groups and signage
  • Rewrote the booking profile, refreshed photos, added Hostelworld Link-Ups
  • Rebuilt the WorldPackers listing from scratch
